Israeli Electronic Dance Music (EDM) | Israel Phenomenology

Israeli Electronic Dance Music (EDM) | Israel Phenomenology

– Why are Israelis so hardcore? What is it that fuels them? (computer dial tones becomes
upbeat hip-hop music) – Hey! – Hi. – Hello. – Okay, you know Israelis, right? The hummus, the prickly on the outside, gushy on the inside sabras. – High tech thrivers, start up drivers, agricultural, ecological,
technological trail blazers. – The cut off shorts, the honking before the light turns green, the six day work week, and yet nobody ever seems to be working. – But, there is still
something you’re missing, something about Israelis, which if you don’t know about, then you don’t really know Israel. (techno music fades in) You hear that? Is it giving you a hint? – Have the computers finally risen up to start the apocalypse? – Israelis love electronic dance music. – Particularly popular in Israel, house music has received
incredible exposure, including such artist
as Avicii, Zed, Tiesto. – In the clubs, Israelis
go especially hard, and that I think is arguably
the most Zionist aspect of Israeli society. – Really? – Hold up, explanation on the horizon. – I should hope so. – So, what’s behind the
Israeli love for EDM? Why do Israelis go so hard? For example, the way they travel. – An estimated 40,000 post army Israelis backpack all over the world each year, in places like Brazil, India and Vietnam. Claiming the need to
recharge before joining the professional workforce. – So these 22 year olds, spend a really big wad
of their hard earned cash on seven, eight month expeditions throughout the world. – I think it costs like 50 bucks to stay in India for eight months. – Also, Israeli food is super intense. Their chocolate is more
chocolatey than other countries, and their salty snacks are way
saltier than American snacks. Ever noticed that? – Bissli induced heart attack anyone? – Everything in Israel has this intensity, but there’s a better word actually. Everything in Israel is just so damn real. And where I see Israeli realness
come out most obviously, is its EDM scene. – Okay, but isn’t it just about escaping? – The way I see it, it’s the opposite. It’s more like exhaling. When the politics, the religious debates, and all the different
perspectives of Israeli life are put to the side, you know what Israeli’s like to do? Dance. – As one Israeli DJ put it, “The DJ liberates them for a few hours “from the conflict and the wars, “and the stress and all
the sh*t of this country.” – There’s a thirst, a hunger for it, and it’s actually the
most Zionist thing of all, because it’s the ultimate expression of self determination. – Come on now, there’s nothing particular
Jewish about EDM. – No, but it’s the Jewish people expressing themselves
freely in their own state. No fighting, no war, just being. That resilience is inherently Jewish. – Nissan Shor who wrote Dancing
With Tears in Their Eyes, a history of 50 years of
dance clubs in Israel, pointed this out as well. He writes, “After the
suicide bomber attack “at the Dolphinarium disco, “the club re-opened and
the kids kept coming. “It wasn’t heartlessness. “It was saying no, “you won’t stop me living my life.” He goes on to say, “I think
this is true Zionism.” – You still haven’t said why
Israelis go so hard with EDM. – Maybe because it’s really say “screw it. “Our ancestors sacrificed so much “after 70 years of statehood,
wars, and hostility, “it’s time to let loose.” Maybe it’s because Israelis are not scared of their surrounding countries anymore, and they feel secure and
ready to just rock out. – Or maybe it’s because
party now is a lot more fun than peace now. – The evolution of EDM in Israel, can be traced back to the late 80s, when Israeli’s started traveling
after military service, and happened upon Goa, India. – As mentioned, India is way cheap. – And it was after backpacking in Goa, where some future Israeli DJ’s, discovered moon parties where… – The full moon party is
an all night beach party, that originated on the island
of Koh Phangan, Thailand, on the night of, before,
or after every full moon. Packed with an electric
collection of electronic and non-electronic dance music. – Uh, an eclectic collection
of alcohol and drugs. – So now psychedelic electronica infused with Chicago
House, Detroit techno, and early German trance, all entered the Israeli musician psyche . And made its way back to Tel Aviv. – The duo of Erez Eisen
and Amit Duvdevani, formed Infected Mushroom. Widely considered one of the
top EDM groups in the world. – The pair spent time in Goa where they perfected their sound. Combining rock, trance,
and psychedelic music. As Duvdevani said, their goal is to keep people
dancing and interested. ♪ Wake me up before I change again ♪ ♪ Remind me the story that I won’t get insane ♪ – Hold on, you’re making
it sound like Israel is some EDM paradise – Okay, it wasn’t always fun and games. Often times things would get out of hand. – In 1997, an Israeli
festival called Lucky Dance was interrupted by police, even though some 30,000
people were in attendance. – Some DJ’s entering the country, found themselves being
hassled by airport security, and sometimes even deported. – Also, terrorism in
the 90s and early 2000s, gave the EDM scene some trouble. – But in many ways, the
EDM scene in Israel, is the direct response
to the frugality of life, felt all too keenly by Israelis. With bombings happening
on a regular basis, it was either hide under the covers, or raise your head up
high, despite it all. – Talk about life being too short. – Exactly. So it was and still is super
important to party hard. And taken in as much life as you can, while you can. And maybe that’s the real reason for why there’s so much
hype for EDM scenes in Israeli society. Speaking personally, why
does dance matter to me? Because it’s really about
the feeling of vulnerability, of authenticity, of identity, of the ability to express myself freely. – According to research professor and public speaker Brene Brown, “True belonging only
happens when we present “our authentic, imperfect
selves to the world. “Our sense of belonging
can never be greater “than our level of self-acceptance.” – And for me, and I think many Israelis, it’s about wanting to be in a space where I can allow myself to be vulnerable. Where I can be in front of people and dance like crazy without
being afraid of being judged. – Dr. Brown also says,
“Vulnerability sounds like truth “and feels like courage. “Truth and courage aren’t
always comfortable, “but they’re never weakness.” – Remember moving to Brooklyn at 21? – Yikes. – Insecure, terrified. I lived in New Orleans all my life, I hadn’t left my parents house until then, and was overwhelmed by everything. – Mostly just the rats. – But one of the ways I was
able to get out of my shell, was actually through listening
to electronic dance music, and dancing in clubs. Maybe for Israeli’s, it’s
that same experience I had, where I felt like I no longer
needed to be trapped by fear, and I could be well the real me. – Sounds like a viable formula. Allowing vulnerability to exist, minus giving into the fear, equals authenticity and
ultimately euphoria. – I think the euphoria part
may have been the music, plus the strobe lights, plus the MDMA. – Anyway, Israeli’s find the ability to just let everything drop, and be real inside their vulnerability. (upbeat music) – Maybe we can learn a better way to find our center from
Israelis and their EDM scene. Might this be the end goal of Zionism? (upbeat music)
